SITUATION:
1000 Hours Outside was growing exponentially and needed to release an official app before competitors beat them to it. The app needed a way to track time spent outside and also to record moments a family experiences together.
Task:
I led the design for the app from concept to implementation.

User flows and App flows were created to ensure no steps were overlooked

Component library

Wireframes were used to ensure layouts were intuitive and clean

ACTIONS:
I started out by researching who the users of the app would be and creating personas based on their likes, wants, and needs. Once I knew who our user was and what they wanted from our app I started the process of creating user flows for the different features. Next I created wireframes for each view that I would need and got feedback from the client, adjusting the layouts when needed. I built a small design system with color palettes, typefaces, font sizes, icons, logos, and using Atomic design theory, built a reusable component library that would help me as new features got added in the future. I worked closely with an app developer to make sure the designs were implemented to spec and gave support to him as the app was launched. Initial feedback was provided via the App store reviews and I quickly addressed some design issues that the users didn't like or found frustrating, releasing a more pleasant experience in V2.

Screenshots from different features in the app. Bright, clean UIs.

RESULTS:
The community was excited and eager to adopt the new app. Overall positive response from users. We have recently added new features including coloring pages, community feeds, and history graphs as well as our newest Recommendations feature with searchable map, ratings of places, and reviews by other 1KHO members.
